In boardrooms, strategy sessions and team meetings, the talk often turns to vision, KPIs and innovation. But we rarely ask the question that shapes everything: Are you really who you say you are?
Because leadership isn’t a role you play. It’s a reflection of who you are; especially when no one is watching.
The world doesn’t need perfect leaders. It needs real leaders.
Leaders who are brave enough to admit that they don’t always know the answers either.
Making those choices based on values, not profit.
Those who dare to say ‘I don’t know’, thereby creating a safe space for others to be human too.
Authentic leadership it’s not about gentleness. It’s about strength rooted in the ground.
About standing firm in who you are, and leading from that place.
What makes a leader authentic?
- Self-awareness.
You’re aware of your blind spots and aren’t afraid to take a good look at yourself. - Transparency.
You don’t gloss over mistakes. You share, you listen, you speak clearly. - Values as a compass.
You don’t let yourself be guided by applause or fear, but by what feels right to you. - Connection.
You don’t interact with people based on your position, but on a person-to-person basis. - The courage to keep growing.
You’re never ‘finished’. And that’s exactly what makes you credible.
Why this matters: especially for top-level leaders.
As a leader, you are not an island. You are the culture.
The sense of security, trust and freedom that you provide is amplified throughout your organisation.
People can sense very clearly whether you’re putting on an act or being genuine.
And let’s be honest: The genuine conversations, the deep commitment, the real leadership – that doesn’t start with others. It starts with you.
An invitation:
What if your leadership were less about control and more about connection?
Less about persuading, more about listening?
Less about who you think you should be, and more about who you really are?
“People don’t follow titles. They follow courage. They follow truth. They follow the real.”
— Freely adapted from Brené Brown
Your team, your organisation, the world; they’re not looking for a superhero.
They’re looking for you. The real you!
